Why Better Homes and Gardens Loves Our Zellige Tile

In a world where it’s easy to get a high-tech, factory-perfect look, there’s a reason why handcrafted design elements are experiencing a resurgence.

Riad Tile’s co-founder, Aubrey Butcher, recently spoke with Better Homes and Gardens to highlight one of the handcrafted materials taking center stage: Zellige tile. If a design trend is profiled by Better Homes and Gardens (the self-proclaimed “go-to resource for home ideas…that can’t be rivaled”), you know it’s popular.

Why Imperfection Reigns

Butcher credits Zellige tile’s originality for the recent rise in interest. She points out that not only is each tile unique, but it’s also a work of art. Those who hand-make the tiles in Morocco are building on a centuries-old tradition that artisans for generations have passed down. The final product and its rich history make these tiles a must-have for contemporary design. Your space gets a fresh look and a compelling story.

The entire process of creating authentic Zellige tile contributes to the final shape and pattern that you’ll get for your design project. Because your handmade tiles are each unique, there’s an art to creating the finished layouts that blend well and feature the imperfections (rather than let them get in the way). Butcher shares her interior design expertise and suggests that clients use tonal grout to complement the tile’s imperfect edges. The client should make choices like grout and tile layout in collaboration with seasoned Zellige installers to ensure that the imperfections are celebrated in the final product.

Handcrafted Versatility

When it comes to using tile in traditional and unusual applications, Butcher says Zellige tile is a standout option. The multi-round kiln firing process makes these tiles more durable than they appear, and Butcher points out that they are strong, resistant to heat and easy to clean. These features make Zellige tiles perfect for kitchens, bathrooms and other traditional tile locations. The imperfections and unique flaws will add flair to a spot that could otherwise go unnoticed. A crisp, clean kitchen look suddenly has depth when you include a unique zellige pattern or color choice.

But why stop with typical tile placements? Butcher (whose journey to Morocco years ago inspired the creation of Riad Tile) tells Better Homes and Gardens that Zellige is found everywhere in the country: “…everything from park benches to the exteriors of buildings to interior stairs is covered in Zellige.”

Her own fireplace is a design project that features dark green Zellige tile. As long as your space doesn’t often go through freeze/thaw cycles, Zellige tile is sturdy enough for even the most unusual applications. And Butcher encourages everyone to embrace Zellige’s many design options, including color and texture. Glazed tiles are vibrant and can show natural color variations, while unglazed options are subtly striking. The choice of color, size and application is almost limitless.
