Moroccan tile design has its roots in Spain and North Africa, dating back to around 700 A.D. Much like today’s Moroccan-style tiles, each one was handmade by skilled craftsmen using natural materials and pigmentation, but while the original Moroccan tiles were made of clay, modern tile is composed of layers of Portland cement, pressed together then cured to ensure durability.
While the methods of production may have changed over the years, Moroccan tile’s distinct style, pattern, and coloration has endured throughout the years and has been enjoyed by a variety of different décor eras by different cultures all over the world. From the palaces of Moorish Spain to today’s mid-century modern households, Moroccan tile has proven to be adaptable to many styles.
