It’s easy to spend hours surfing the web for tile ideas. Eventually, the perfect tile layout and design might present itself. If nothing totally grabs you, consider creating your own custom design.

Tile Design Sketches, Software, and Apps

If you’re artistic, you can create a custom look with your own tile design sketches. Tile planning software and apps also give you a sense of what tile types, sizes, colors and patterns will look like on a wall, floor or as backsplash.

The Houzz View in My Room 3D tool now enables you to virtually drop tile into your space via your smartphone to see what it looks like. It also calculates the amount of tile you’ll need for your project. You can download the app from the iPhone and iPad app store or Android device store.

Precision Tile Pro from Laurel Creek Software is another option. Professional designers and DIYers alike can use this digital tool to design wall and floor layouts with custom grout and tile colors and patterns. You can also make instant changes and adjustments to render different designs. This is fantastic when you want to play around with and test tile colors, shapes, patterns and layouts.

Maticad Tile Calculator, Floor Covering, Design Appy and Primer AR Home Design are more virtual tile layout app options.

Order Tile Samples

Tile comes in many varieties, including ceramic, porcelain, cement, marble, Zellige, and Terrazzo. Ordering tile samples to touch, feel and hold up in your dream space is always a good idea. Tiles can look different online — and if you’re using Zellige tile, no two tiles will ever look the same.

You can order up to four sample tiles per style at Riad Tile. Comparing colors, patterns and shapes firsthand helps you narrow down the tiles you do and don’t like — and it’s also fun!

Hire a Pro Designer or Ask a Tile Expert

If you’ve explored many tile options and are still trying to figure out what to do, hire an interior design pro or ask a tile expert for suggestions and guidance. You can ask family members, friends, and colleagues for local interior design recommendations or do a Google search for “interior designers near me.”
