Kitchen Design Inspo: A Maroon Moment With Midcentury Flair

We’re looking at a kitchen renovation for this week’s customer spotlight that puts all other glow-ups to shame. Last fall, Katherine Thewlis, who runs a Hausmatter Interiors, a design boutique based in Tennessee, updated her kitchen in a vision of burgundy and blush.

You might hear “pink kitchen” and balk, but trust us, you need to see this one needs to believe it. Take a look:

Every component in this kitchen compliments the next, but for us, the star is our 4×4 Blush Zellige tile on the backsplash.

Katherine Thewlis told us, “this kitchen really started with the tile as the inspiration,” and we love the direction she went in with it.

Thewlis only had 200 square feet to work with for her kitchen and made the most of it with burgundy cabinets, a burgundy fridge (which she painted herself), white countertops and floors, a geometric textured island, and our 4×4 Blush Zellige.

Thewlin placed a mirror over the sink to provide a window into the adjacent room and open up the space. We can see this stunning mural from Hygge & West through the mirror, which Thewlin also calls central to her inspiration in her blog post

The balance of wine-colored cabinets with a softer salmon on the backsplash serves midcentury modern glamor. This stately and striking combination has us feeling like we’re touring the set design of retro classics like Mad Men or Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and we can’t get enough.

With the combination of matte maroon hues, a glazed blush backdrop, and a nighttime scene of herons perched by a crescent moon, this color choice is bold without being brazen. The colors calm us despite being nontraditional, and the retro vibes of the look don’t do anything to take away from its contemporary marvel.

Our key takeaway from this drool-worthy kitchen reno? Don’t hesitate to go bold. Monochrome doesn’t always mean muted, and that’s never been more apparent than it is in this Hausmatter masterpiece.
