How to Mix and Match Tile for a Spectacular DIY Result

Rooms with a simple, uniform look have their place, but adding some personality to renovation projects is more fun. Using tile is a great way to choose quality materials without compromising style. There are almost endless possibilities for design enthusiasts when you’re not afraid to mix and match your tile options.

Mix and Match Colors to Stay on Trend

Trendy designs might inspire your home tile projects, but that doesn’t mean you always want to copy the blueprints exactly. Putting your spin on the year’s popular styles is the key to designing a space you’ll love. The visionary designs from @theidentitecollective always inspire us, and this use of a colorful twist on an old classic is no different.

This timeless checkerboard pattern is on trend for 2024, but these designers knew they needed something unique for such a chic, rustic kitchen. Combining their color choices in the same hue family makes the result dramatic and trendy without being distracting. Our Sea Green and Forest Green 4”x4” Zellige tiles perfectly complement each other and mirror the dark and light checkered patterns you usually see in black and white.

Create Texture from Subtle Combinations

Hand-crafted and high-quality tiles like our Zellige collection already have the warmth and depth designers look for to add intrigue to a space, but if you’re after even more texture, try mixing and matching colors. The beauty of combining tile colors, shapes, and sizes to create texture is that you can craft a subtle and unassuming look.

The team at @cm.interiors capitalized on this stunning effect by combining two shades of our Zellige tiles. The Natural White and Glazed Clay 2”x6” tiles have the same saturation level and blend well in large groups, so one color doesn’t overpower another. The pattern isn’t busy, and the tiles aren’t too large, so the overall effect is understated yet polished. Try creating these subtle combinations if you have DIY tile projects that could use a little extra oomph.

Evoke an Exciting Environment

Spaces can be flat and lack personality or transport visitors to an environment catered to their needs. Would you like a tranquil, serene bath? Incorporate tiles and accessories in muted tones and simple patterns. Is a dark, luxurious bedroom more appealing? Curate the space with rich tones and comforting fabrics. We all know that a real-life mood isn’t one-dimensional, so by mixing and matching tile colors, sizes, and shapes, you can create the environment that evokes the feelings you’re after.

The team at Riad loves to gather inspiration from all over the world, and our expanded showroom is the perfect place to recreate some of the environments that have left an impression.

With a little bit of architectural magic and three different tile choices, this corner of the showroom demonstrates how the best tile store in Dallas likes to mix and match for some added excitement, rather than feeling like you’re in a warehouse, combining our Emerald Green and Snow 4”x4” Zellige on the floors transports you to one of our favorite destinations: Marrakesh. The archway with our Unglazed Natural 2”x6” Chiseled Zellige is the perfect gateway to introduce this little paradise.

Plenty of Tile, Just One Focus

There are many rooms where an abundance of tile makes sense: bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms are easier to clean and maintain when you use tile for floors and the backsplash — or the whole wall. What are your options if you’re not interested in having an entire room of the same tile? Fortunately, you can keep the beauty and practicality of a thoroughly tiled space without compromising design quality; mix and match! The key is to choose one tile design as the focal point and incorporate other shapes and colors in supporting roles.

The designers in both spaces, @jaclynmari_ and @farmhouseish, used our Snow 4”x4” Zellige tiles on the walls to support their stunning floor tiles. The classic checkerboard with Casablanca Carrara and Bardiglio Grey 12”x12” marble adds sophistication to the laundry room, while the whimsical Dandelion Black ceramic tile helps the bathroom feel far more fun. Neither space feels overwhelming.

The next time you’re looking for the best way to add extra excitement with tiles in your upcoming DIY project, consider mixing and matching to create the space of your dreams.
