Get Creative With Design: Treat Your Bookshelves to Tile

A Virtual Bore

By now, we’re all familiar with the bookshelf background that’s on every Zoom call. Video backgrounds are something many of us didn’t think twice about prior to 2020, but now they’re an essential part of our professional personas. Suddenly, we were all tasked with designing at-home workspaces that were on display to our coworkers, and the variety that spanned our computer screens were myriad.

Let’s begin with the obvious: no one wants to be the all-white (yet somehow dimly lit) blank wall background person. Nothing says “I have as much spice in my life as a bowl of yogurt” quite as effectively. But you also don’t want to be the person who has way too much going on, causing everyone to drift off during meetings and play I-spy with your home office. So how do you land in that sweet-spot of design; something that is classy both on-screen and off?

Enter: the bookshelf. Whether or not the books have even been cracked, a bookshelf is professional and stylish. You don’t even have to fill it with books: we as a society have settled firmly into the “abstract-sculptural-pieces-over-books” age of bookshelf design, and we’re here for it. But what if even that is a bit…bleh? We have a trend to style your bookshelves that will leave everyone on your Zoom call thinking, “why aren’t they an interior designer?” (unless you already are).

Enter: Tile

This is where the fun, and our tile, comes into play. Whether it’s patterned cement or shiny Zellige, adding some tile to the back of a book-nook or shelf is a great way to bring something different to the table (or screen). Tile the back wall, the individual shelves, or all of the above! Check out some of our tiles used in shelved nooks, below:

Marble

Our Casablanca Carrara Marble Tile is simple and chic, bringing just enough depth to keep a space interesting while not detracting from accessories. This framed photo and spotlight make the space even more sophisticated, giving both colonial and contemporary vibes. This look is professional without being stiff.

Zellige

These next looks feature our Zellige Tile, which is famously hand-crafted and one-of-a-kind. Zellige is our most popular tile by far, giving a glossy finish and unique texture to any space. We’re confident that Zellige works almost anywhere, and these nooks with floating shelves only prove us right. If you want your space to wow, this tile is the one.

Encaustic Cement

Finally, if you’re ready for something undeniably eye-catching, check out our Encaustic Cement Tiles. Pictured below is our Havana Grey Cement Tile on a bookshelf by Olerio Homes. It looks like wallpaper, but is far more durable and easy-to-maintain. Our cement tiles come in an array of shapes and designs, making this option extremely customizable.
